The Meeting
Meera was completely busy with finishing her post graduation when her parents started talking about her marriage. Being a typical businessman, Meera’s father never allowed her to work. Despite of being a trained post graduate teacher Meera could not fulfill her dream of becoming a teacher. She was shattered and very angry with her parents but could not fight her dad. Meera’s mother as always consoled her and talked her about the meetings that would be planned to meet prospective boys as is the case in arrange marriages. Meera could not ever understand that how by meeting a boy for just about half n hour, you decide that whether or not you want to spend your life with him. How insane is that, Meera thought. She could never come to terms with this. But somewhere in her heart she knew that she would have to follow it, go through it, however stupid it may seem.
And finally the day came when the first meeting was fixed. It was meant to be in the lobby of a five star hotel. Meera’s mother was totally excited. She bought new clothes for Meera, new footwear, matching earrings etc etc. she wanted Meera to look her best. And indeed she did look very beautiful. But inside her heart was beating so loudly that she feared people might be able to hear it. She was extremely nervous. All the advices given to her about possible questions and their suitable answers vanished somehow and Meera felt goosebumps all over. Meera and her family reached the venue first and the boy’s family arrived after sometime. The family looked decent , Meera thought and the boy too, not bad. After the initial formalities of hellos and how do you do, the girl and the boy were sent to another table to chat and to presumably “ know each other “ . Those 20 minutes had arrived, thought Meera on the basis of which to decide whether or not to spend my life with this completely unknown human being and yet she felt a lump in her throat and not utter a single word.
Dhruv, the boy , was the first to break the silence. He asked Meera about her studies and so did she. Then he asked about her hobbies and Meera could feel the pressure of the interview. During the conversation somewhere Meera picked up her courage and asked Dhruv that despite being an MBA graduate from one of the IIM’s why was he into his dad’s business when he could have got a decent job. Very arrogantly Dhruv replied, “ I can’t work under someone, I don’t like to take orders, I would rather give them. “ Meera could not ask any questions further nor was she able to answer any properly because somehow she didn’t like Dhruv’s attitude.
Everyone asked Meera that how did it go?? She told her mom about the job question and how she felt about it but her parents liked the family so they didn’t pay much attention and answered with a mere “ let’s see.” But Meera was too much worried. She kept on thinking how would things be, how compatible could she be with such an arrogant husband. Three days passed and there was no reply from Dhruv’s side. It was a mixed feeling. Meera was relieved and elated as she didn’t liked Dhruv, but somewhere she was also a little annoyed about being rejected. It was a blow to her self confidence. She discussed this with a lot of friends and family that how stupid this meeting process was and how hard it is emotionally to go through all this. She hated when people are eyeing her from head to toe, judging her all the time, noticing all her actions. God! she thought if she could just run away. But there was nothing that she could do about it. In a month’s time another such meeting was fixed and again everybody got super excited. Meera’s mother got her another new dress coz she thought last time dress was the culprit for the rejection.
There were five such meetings in the following four months and Meera’s wardrobe had a new dress everytime. Sometimes she rejected and sometimes got rejected but she had learnt the art now and was no longer scared of them. When asked for reasons she said there’s no CLICK. Her entire family was fed up with this CLICK and were waiting eagerly for it to happen. Meera went through lots of question and answer round during such meetings. One particular boy asked very stupid questions and she just wanted to flee the place. In one such meeting where she did very positively feel the CLICK, the boy didn’t maybe and so things didn’t work out. When rejected she told herself that he didn’t deserved her and while rejecting she said everything happens for ones own good.
It was a Sunday and the 6 th meeting was on schedule. It was another 5 star lobby , another new dress and as usual Meera’s super excited family reached first. After some twenty minutes arrived Raj’s family. Meera was her usual self all sweet and smiling. And then came the most awaited moment, to go and have a chat. Meera liked Raj and there was something sweet and charming about him. With him the conversation just happened smoothly and effortlessly. After the meeting when Raj’s family left Meera’s brother asked her, “ so how was it? Did you feel the CLICK ?” And to her surprise she heard herself replying with a confident yes.
So finally Meera found her soulmate through this torturous process and is happy as ever now. For all my friends who are going through this process or who would be, don’t feel pressured. This is your life darlings, feel free to meet different people before making that decision. Take your own sweet time, listen to your heart and always remember Everything Happens For Ones Own Good.
